There are some historical dynamics, or, let´s say, dynamics that go beyond our scope of understanding. Few people care about what is going to happen beyond their lifespan... even less beyond their children or grandchildren. What can you do? Things change so quickly in one generation, that it is difficult to see one´s existence having a transcendence for the future.
Buildings, pieces of art, objects, deeds, a story... all of that can be remembered, but little more. We know the dynamics that have remained... like opening the commerce between two continents, like winning a war or inventing something that significantly changes the way things are done. But we only study them, it seems, backwards. We understand better who we are, where we are and why we are the way the are, by looking and understanding our past. But... do we know where we are going? If I look at the Human dynamics, as a society, I cannot see much interest except for the technological advances. We are basically lengthening our life and adjusting our environment to our convenience. But when we think of what we do with our time and energy... produce and consume, I would say, is what we do mostly. What for? In 100 years from now we may be able to travel to other planets, live longer, maybe have a cleaner planet and access to information, knowledge and means that we never imagined. But still... what for?
I don´t think there is an idea of where we want to be. Global targets, like reaching the stars, seem to be the most motivating... together with our immediate existence, which we basically try to make pleasant, but not necessarily rich. Otherwise, how can we justify that the existence of billions of people is so futile, so useless? So secondary.
